Old CarsAs we journey across the country and explore scenic byways off the beaten track, we regularly come upon shocking items of Americana. Rich with history, the Black Hills of South Dakota was as soon as house to the most important gold mine in the U.S.. The Homestead mine, located in Lead, South Dakota, was in operation from 1876 until 2002. It is common to see abandoned gold and silver mines in Black Hills round Lead and Deadwood, though now their fundamental points of interest are as tourist towns. It was there, within the Black Hills near Deadwood, that I found some interesting photogenic jewels hidden within the bushes and brush alongside the much less traveled roads – they usually had nothing to do with the gold rush!
